The Mazda 2022 SUV line-up breakdown
Mazda is known for making well-rounded SUVs that deliver great value for money. For the 2022 model year, the Japanese automaker has downsized its SUV lineup with the discontinuation of the subcompact CX-3. So, if you’re planning to buy a Mazda SUV, you have three options available: the compact CX-30, the compact CX-5, and the midsize CX-9. Let’s take a closer look at these SUV models to determine which one best fits your needs and preferences:
The All-New 2022 Mazda CX-30
The Mazda CX-30 underwent significant changes in the 2021 model year, including the addition of an available turbo-four engine and the standardization of Android and Apple CarPlay. Therefore, updates for the 2022 model are expected to be minimal. The most notable change is the elimination of front-wheel-drive versions, which applies to the entire Mazda SUV lineup. Besides being an exclusively all-wheel-drive vehicle, the CX-30 may see some reshuffling of features between trim levels and receive more wheel or color options.
The 2022 Mazda CX-30 should come in the same seven trim levels as its predecessor: the base 2.5 S, Select, Preferred, Premium, 2.5 Turbo, 2.5 Turbo Premium, and the top-spec 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus. Expect prices to range from the low-$20,000s to the mid-$30,000s. When fully loaded, this model is comparable to some small crossovers from luxury brands in terms of interior quality, comfort, and features, making it a great value proposition.
For 2022, the Mazda CX-30 will most likely come standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 186 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. If you want more power, you can go for the optional 2.5-liter turbo-four that produces up to 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque. Similar to other Mazda models, this SUV is exceptionally fun to drive, thanks to its sharp steering and athletic handling.
Few compact SUVs have a more refined and feature-laden interior than the CX-30. The crossover features a stylish cabin with comfortable seating and an abundance of premium materials and soft-touch surfaces. Every trim offers a generous selection of infotainment features, including an 8.8-inch touch-screen display, an eight-speaker sound system, a Wi-Fi hot spot, voice recognition, HD radio, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay.
Additionally, you’ll have a long list of standard driver-assistance technologies to help you stay safe on the road. These features include automatic high-beam headlamps, forward-collision alert, automatic emergency braking, rain-sensing windshield wipers, driver-attention monitoring, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian monitoring, lane-keeping assistance, and lane-departure alert.
2022 Mazda CX-5
Unlike its smaller sibling, the Mazda CX-5 has been considerably refreshed for 2022. The SUV gets a new 2.5 Turbo trim, which replaces the Grand Touring Reserve, and its top-of-the-line model is now called 2.5 Turbo Signature. Consequently, its current trim lineup comprises the entry-level Sport, Touring, Carbon Edition, Carbon Edition Turbo, Grand Touring, 2.5 Turbo, and the range-topping 2.5 Turbo Signature. Prices should be about the same as those of the previous year’s model, which starts at $25,370 and goes up to $37,505.
On the outside, the latest Mazda CX-5 receives smoother surfaces on its front and rear ends, a new three-dimensional mesh grille, and reshaped LED headlamps. The 2.5 Turbo comes with gloss-black exterior trim and a unique interior with red accents and contrast stitching. On the other hand, the 2.5 Turbo Signature adds body-colored exterior cladding, bright silver wheels, and a premium cabin with Nappa leather upholstery and wood-grain trim. The crossover will also offer a new color option called Zircon Sand and an array of new wheel designs.
In addition, every model of the CX-5 has been fitted with redesigned seats that provide better support and a wireless Qi phone-charger in the center console. Improved sound-deadening features result in a quieter and more tranquil ride, especially when moving over rough surfaces.
Mazda also made a number of performance upgrades to the CX-5. These include a revised suspension and chassis for better handling and ride quality and a re-tuned transmission for smoother and more responsive shifts. The SUV also gets the Mazda Intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive) system, which enables you to choose between several driving modes for enhanced handling in different situations.
Other than these changes, the 2022 Mazda CX-5 remains largely the same as its predecessor. It continues to share the same engines with the Mazda CX-30 and feature an upscale cabin with high-quality materials and plenty of features. Also, it has most of the standard infotainment and driver-assistance features of the smaller crossover, plus a larger 10.25-inch touch-screen display, blind-spot detection, and rear cross-traffic warning.
2022 Mazda CX-9
Now in its second generation, the Mazda CX-9 is expected to undergo a mid-cycle refresh for the 2022 model year. The refresh will likely include exterior and interior updates and some changes to the standard and available packages. According to rumors, the CX-9 may also receive a new V-6 engine or a hybrid version. However, it remains speculation until Mazda releases official information about the updates.
If the 2022 Mazda CX-9 is a carry-over from the previous year, it’ll be offered in five trim levels: the Sport, Touring, Carbon Edition, Grand Touring, and Signature. Considering the intense competition in the midsize SUV segment, pricing for the new CX-9 should be close to that of the outgoing model, which starts at $34,160. The highest trim should top out around $50,000.
Regardless of whether the Mazda CX-9 will have an additional engine, it should come standard with a 2.5-liter turbo-four that generates 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. This engine is one of the most fuel-efficient in the segment, delivering 22/28 mpg (city/highway). In addition, the CX-9 provides the ideal blend of driving enjoyment and ride comfort, thanks to its well-tuned suspension and precise steering. Its opulent cabin features top-notch fit and finish, roomy and comfortable seats, and an extensive selection of standard tech and safety features.
