November 2nd, 2023 by

Quick acceleration delivers an adrenaline rush most drivers enjoy. There’s nothing quite like feeling yourself pressed into the seat from the G-forces as you rocket down the road. Beyond the thrill fast acceleration provides it has an essential impact on performance and safety. How a vehicle accelerates can affect the entire driving experience. For instance, a robust effort from an engine can make it easier to merge onto highways or pass vehicles. It also helps in emergency maneuvers where stopping isn’t an option. The 2024 Mazda vehicle lineup has powerful engines designed to enhance the driving experience. So, we asked our technicians at Hiley Mazda of Fort Worth, Texas, to detail the zero to 60 mph times to help you decide which model suits your driving style best. Mazda3 Acceleration Times

The Mazda3 sedan has two engine options. The base models have a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 191 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. However, we recommend you opt for the 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder powertrain standard on the top tiers. This engine produces 250 horsepower, 310 lb-ft of torque, and sprints to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds. We’ve all found ourselves in the wrong lane at a red light and needing to get out quickly to change lanes. That requires acceleration, and the Mazda3 turbo handles this maneuver with aplomb.

Mazda CX-30 Acceleration Times

Mazda has two engine options for its eight-trim CX-30 lineup. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine puts out 191 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, and the 2.5-liter turbocharged variant produces 250 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Of course, the heavier SUV takes a little longer to reach 60 mph with the same engine as the Mazda3, but it still impresses — the base model engine goes from zero to 60 mph in 9 seconds. Testing on the turbo models resulted in a 6.4-second time. Aided by Mazda’s all-wheel drive (AWD) system, the CX-30 has the grip and performance to tackle your Fort Worth commute, come rain or shine.

Mazda CX-5 Acceleration Times

Mazda equipped the CX-5 base model SUV  with its 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine. This powertrain makes 187 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque. CX-5 models with this engine reach 60 mph in 8.0 seconds. Top-tier models feature Mazda’s 2.5-liter turbo four-cylinder, producing 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. The turbocharged models shave off nearly two seconds with a 6.1-second zero to 60 mph time. Every CX-5 has the i-ACTIV AWD system for enhanced control over various road surfaces and weather conditions. As a result, the CX-5 has the versatility to leave the pavement behind and accelerate with confidence.

Mazda MX-5 Miata Acceleration Times

Mazda is updating the 2024 Miata model, but we anticipate it having the same powertrain found in the 2023 model year. Mazda makes its popular two-seater roadster in the MX-5 Miata and MX-5 Miata RF variant. The MX-5 Miata has a Sport, Club, and Grand Touring trim, all with the same SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine with dual overhead cams and 16 valves with variable valve timing technology. A six-speed manual transmission comes standard, with an automatic transmission only available on the Grand Touring trim. This powertrain puts out 181 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. But don’t let these lower power numbers fool you. The lightweight MX-5 Miata flashes from zero to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. Mazda’s MX-5 Miata RF variant has a hard top versus the standard Miata’s soft top. As a result, the slightly heavier RF clocked a zero to 60 mph time of 5.8 seconds. The grin-inducing MX-5 Miata continues to impress. Its low center of gravity, lightweight design, and six-speed manual transmission make this an enjoyable, fun-to-drive car. If you love zipping in and out of corners and flying down straightaways, the MX-5 Miata checks all the boxes.

Mazda6 Acceleration Times

Mazda announced a redesign of the 2024 Mazda6 sedan. First, the new sedan will have a rear-wheel-drive system. Second, Mazda plans on introducing a new SKYACTIV-X engine with mild-hybrid technology. Mazda hasn’t announced numbers yet, but we expect it to outperform its predecessor. The 2023 Mazda6 has a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine that has 235 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. This edition clocked a 7.9-second zero to 60 mph time.

The new Mazda CX-90 comes in eight trim levels. The base engine is a 3.3-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. As a result, this powertrain produces 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. However, the upper trims have a high-output version of the same engine. In these models you get 319 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough power to propel the CX-90 from a standstill to 60 mph in just 6.5 seconds. Mazda also makes a plug-in hybrid variant of the CX-90 that makes an impressive 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. This powertrain races from zero to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds. Both versions have zero to 60 mph figures close to those of the smaller CX-30 and CX-5. Not bad for a three-row SUV. Like most Mazda SUVs, the CX-90 comes standard with AWD. However, Mazda designed the CX-90 with a rear-biased AWD system that sends power to the rear axle first. If the system detects a loss of traction from the front axle, it distributes torque forward to keep you glued to the road. Mazda makes no apologies for creating a family SUV with the driver’s happiness at the forefront. Instead of feeling like driving a refrigerator around town, you feel the responsiveness of a sports sedan and might even forget you have kids riding along.
