Mazda’s Electrification Plan

In 2021, the Japanese automaker Mazda unveiled its very first all-electric vehicle. Like other already established automakers, Mazda seems to be testing the electric market with a few models before potentially going all in on electrification. Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030

Mazda is a late entrant into the EV market. The automaker has finally decided to wade into the budding but incredibly lucrative electric vehicle industry with a long-term sustainability strategy dubbed Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030. Under this plan, Mazda will develop a couple of fully electric cars, hybrids, and an EV platform. While fully electric vehicles rely on a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and electric drivetrain for propulsion, plug-in hybrids have both an internal combustion engine and a battery pack.

Mazda’s first all-electric offering to the EV market will be the 2022 MX-30 electric crossover. According to Mazda, the MX-30 is designed for city driving and will launch in California before becoming available in other states. Mazda hopes to have developed a range of fully electrified vehicles by the year 2030 under its long-term electrification strategy.

This plan has different stages that will see Mazda introduce:

• An EV-only platform called the Skyactiv EV Scalable Architecture that can be adjusted for different-sized battery EVs from 2025.
• Three fully electric models.
• Five plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
• Five hybrid models.

The fully electric and hybrid models will be built on the Skyactiv EV Scalable Architecture and will launch from 2022 to 2025. Mazda also plans on launching other fully electric vehicles built on a dedicated EV platform between 2025 and 2030.

The 2022 MX-30 Electric Crossover

We can’t talk about Mazda’s electrification plants without discussing its first battery-electric vehicle, the MX-30 SUV. The EV is equipped with a relatively small battery, features eye-catching exterior styling, and uses sustainable materials for an even more reduced carbon footprint. How does the MX-30 SUV compare to similar electric vehicles? Will Mazda’s debut electric car be able to compete with the increasing number of electric cars on the market? Let’s see.

Overview of the MX-30 SUV

The MX-30 is a relatively small electric SUV featuring a simplistic cabin design and a stylish, eye-catching design. The roofline is reminiscent of a coupe, and it has rear-hinged back doors, similar to BMW’s i3 electric car. Mazda’s new fully electric vehicle is equipped with a relatively small 30kWh battery pack capable of going up to 100 miles on a single charge. It’s a front-wheel-drive model with one electric motor driving both front wheels.

The starting MSRP for the standard trim will be $34,645, while the premium plus model will retail at $37,655.

Performance, Charging, and Battery Life

Mazda’s first battery EV will come equipped with a single 143 horsepower electric motor for both front wheels, and there will be no all-wheel-drive options. The battery will take 36 minutes to get to 80% on a Level 3 charger and 170 minutes on a Level 2 charger. Still, the MX-30’s steering and handling are sharp and responsive, and you’ll likely enjoy driving this EV around town.

Safety

Mazda’s safety technology, the i-Activsense, is continually evolving to offer more protection to you as a driver, your passengers, and the pedestrians.

Some of the safety features in MX-30 include:

• Driver Attention Alert: This standard feature from Mazda monitors your accelerator and steering inputs, activating a warning if your attention decreases or your behavior suggests fatigue.
• Front Cross Traffic Alert: This feature warns you of fast-approaching cars when you’re entering a driveway or intersection.
• Radar Cruise Control: You can maintain a preset speed and following distance from the vehicle ahead through this stop and go feature.
• Blind Spot Assist: This feature detects fast-approaching vehicles or objects entering your blind spot and displays a warning on the dashboard and side mirrors.

Interior

The MX-30’s interior is built using natural and sustainable materials made from recycled plastic bottles. The EV features an 8.8-inch infotainment screen on the dashboard that controls the navigation, audio system, and backup camera. The interface is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The front seats are spacious enough for two adults, and the back seats have ample space for children, so the MX-30 could make a great family vehicle. Additionally, the cargo space behind the back seats can be increased considerably by folding down the second-row seats when you need extra space for groceries.

Customers will have the option of extra features like a 7-inch digital gauge display, heated front seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a power sunroof.

Mazda’s EV Future

Mazda plans on developing a range of all-electric and hybrid vehicles over the next decade, starting with the MX-30. In the meantime, the Japanese automaker will continue working on its internal combustion engine cars. Mazda vehicles are known for their fuel economy, technology, and stylish exteriors.
