2023 Mazda CX-90 Safety Features

Replacing the CX-9 as Mazda’s new flagship SUV, the CX-90 will be fitted with the finest features the Japanese automaker has to offer. Similar to its predecessor, the all-new SUV is a well-rounded vehicle that impresses in almost every department.

Performance and Fuel Economy

All the powertrains of the Mazda CX-90 will outperform the CX-9’s standard 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The base engine of this new Mazda is a turbocharged 3.3-liter straight-six with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. It pairs with a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

When you put regular fuel in a standard model, the six-cylinder powertrain produces 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque and delivers a fuel-efficiency rating of 24/28 mpg (city/highway). On the other hand, a Turbo S 3.3 model using higher-octane premium fuel can generate up to 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. That’s 90 horsepower and 49 lb-ft of torque more than a CX-9 on premium fuel. The higher-output engine returns 23/28 mpg.

The Mazda CX-90 borrows its all-new e-Skyactiv plug-in-hybrid powertrain from the CX-60, which was recently launched in Europe. Consisting of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder electric motor and a 17.8 kWh battery, this setup is rated at 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft torque when running on premium fuel. Although official specifications aren’t available yet, it’s expected to provide the same all-electric driving range as the CX-60, which is 39 miles.

Interior Room

The Mazda CX-90 is longer and wider and has a longer wheelbase than any current Mazda SUV. This extra space enables it to seat up to eight people. You can opt for the available middle-row captain’s chairs, but it reduces the seating capacity to seven. The first- and second-row seats provide ample legroom and headroom for even tall people to stretch out. The third row is less spacious, but it offers decent comfort for average-sized adults.

Interior Features

The Mazda CX-90 comes standard with a wide array of interior LED lighting, a power driver’s seat, push-button start, and keyless entry. To provide a connected and enjoyable ride, the SUV features an intuitive infotainment system with a 12.3-inch touch-screen display, which is 2 inches larger than the CX-9’s. The Mazda CX-90 has eight trims for you to choose from: the entry-level 3.3 Turbo Select, 3.3 Turbo Preferred, 3.3 Turbo Preferred Plus, 3.3 Turbo Premium, 3.3 Turbo Premium Plus, 3.3 Turbo S, 3.3 Turbo S Premium, and the range-topping 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus. The plug-in-hybrid powertrain is available on the mid-range Preferred, Premium, and Premium Plus trims. The starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price of this Mazda SUV is $39,595.

Mazda CX-70

If you’re looking for a smaller plug-in-hybrid SUV, the Mazda CX-70 is worth your consideration. This two-row, midsize crossover is the American version of the European CX-60 model. With its stout powertrain, athletic handling, a top-class interior, and plenty of tech and safety features, it promises to deliver a better driving experience than most of its rivals.

Engine and Performance

The Mazda CX-70 will most likely offer the same turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six and plug-in-hybrid system that power the CX-90. Although it hasn’t been announced, the six-cylinder should be the lower-output version that serves up 280 horsepower. With the plug-in-hybrid powertrain, the SUV is expected to complete a zero-to-60-mph dash in the mid-five-second range since the CX-60 is capable of sprinting to 62 mph in 5.8 seconds. Similarly, the CX-70 will get an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive as standard equipment.

Gas Mileage

With its smaller size and lighter weight, the Mazda CX-70 should deliver better fuel efficiency than the CX-90 with either engine. If you choose a plug-in-hybrid model, you’ll also have an all-electric range of 39 miles. The battery will likely have the same charging times as that of a plug-in-hybrid CX-60, which takes about 90 minutes to recharge from 20% to 80% using a 7.4 kW AC home charger.

Interior and Features

On the inside, the Mazda CX-70 may share some styling elements with the CX-60. The interior of the CX-60 is stylish and sophisticated and uses captivating materials, such as Japanese textiles, maple wood, chrome, and Nappa leather. So, you can expect the CX-70 to have an equally aesthetically pleasing cabin. Also, leather seats should be standard on most trim levels.

The CX-70 will probably come with a large touch-screen display, perhaps the same 12.3-inch unit found in the CX-90. Common tech features, such as Bluetooth, smartphone compatibility, and USB ports, should come standard. The SUV’s safety specifications are expected to measure up to the CX-9 at the very least, meaning it will most likely offer automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring on every model.
