The official towing capacity that Mazda has associated with this model is a little over 3,000 pounds. That’s a braked figure, however, which assumes the towed trailer has its own brakes. With an unbraked trailer, the maximum capacity is around 1,650 pounds. With that, the Mazda3 is fairly on par with the pulling power of several popular subcompact crossovers.

CX-30

The Mazda CX-30 is a subcompact crossover, a class of vehicles that aren’t much larger than sedans. In fact, measuring 173 inches in length, it isn’t as long as the Mazda3, and it stands only around 5 inches taller. Given its slight frame, Mazda doesn’t specify the CX-30’s towing capacity in the 2024 spec deck, but other sources note that it can pull around the same weight as the Mazda3.

CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 takes you up in class to the realm of compact SUVs, which generally pull up to 3,500 pounds. The 2024 CX-5 is a cozy daily driver that measures around 180 inches long, 72 inches wide, and 83 inches tall, so it’s smaller than many of its class competitors. Even so, the towing capacity of the CX-5 comes in at a respectable 2,000 pounds across all eight of its trim levels.

CX-50

The Mazda CX-50 is another compact crossover, but it has a bit more heft and power than the CX-5. It has a body measuring around 185 inches long, 64 inches tall, and 73 inches wide without side mirrors, and it offers a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds.

CX-90

The Mazda CX-90 is a full-on midsize SUV, placing it in a class of vehicles that can generally pull between 3,500 and 8,000 pounds. At around 200 inches long, 68 inches tall, and 77 inches wide with the mirrors folded, the 2024 CX-90 is comparable in size to its competitors. When properly equipped, it has a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.

Trailer Stability Control (TSC)

For TSC to operate properly, Mazda strongly recommends equipping your vehicle with correctly sized tires on all four wheels and that they have the same manufacturer, brand, and tread pattern. The system may not work as intended if you use a spare tire or tire chains.

Mazda Intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive)

Mi-Drive is an on-board system that allows you to switch drive modes to accommodate different driving, road, and vehicle conditions. In models including the CX-50 and the CX-90, the Mi-Drive options are Sport, Off-Road, and Towing. With the Towing mode selected, the system compensates for the trailer weight by adjusting how your vehicle’s transmission shifts, thereby improving stability and handling.

i-ACTIV All-Wheel Drive (AWD)

Mazda’s i-ACTIV AWD system automatically distributes torque between the front and rear wheels to improve safety, comfort, and fuel efficiency in various driving scenarios, including towing. The system constantly monitors road conditions and factors such as your accelerator position, steering angle, and brake fluid pressure. With the data it gathers, i-ACTIV makes instantaneous adjustments that optimize your vehicle for any situation.
