According to the brand, there are plans to make its current EV, the Mazda MX-30, available to more consumers by expanding sales to additional states throughout 2022. Mazda also claims a plug-in hybrid EV will drop sometime in 2022, but few details are available at this time.

Limited Run of the 2022 Mazda MX-30

Mazda announced a limited release of the MX-30 in 2022, with just 560 vehicles available exclusively in California. As the manufacturer’s first attempt at an electric car, the MX-30 shows promise for future models. Let’s take a look at the design and features of the MX-30 to get a better idea of what we can expect from future Mazda EV releases.

Exterior

The Mazda MX-30 is a modern and sophisticated-looking vehicle with a low roofline, fastback rear styling, and unique flared fenders. At 173.3 inches in length, the MX-30 is shorter than the Nissan Leaf, but a bit longer than the Chevy Bolt EUV, Kira Niro EV, or the Hyundai Kona EV. According to Mazda, the exterior of the MX-30 was inspired by their previous Kodo design and evolved to take on a stunning new form. The pillarless freestyle door system makes it easy to access the back seat and offers drivers a greater feeling of openness.

Interior

Mazda continues to lean into an eco-friendly design by using sustainable materials for the interior of the MX-30, including a combination of recycled fabric and cork trim. The stylish and comfortable interior design highlights the true craftsmanship many drivers associate with Mazda vehicles. Standard options include adaptive cruise control, blind spot and cross traffic alerts, front and rear automatic braking, low-speed front cross traffic alert, and lane keeping assist. The Mazda MX-30 also features a driver attention alert, head up display, and automatic high beams. Mazda also crafted this vehicle with a rigid body and reinforcements to protect drivers and their passengers by absorbing energy during collisions. An extra layer of protection and a high voltage shut-off mechanism ensure the battery remains intact in the event of an accident.

Trim Levels

The Mazda MX-30 comes in the standard EV trim level and the Premium Plus trim level. If you’re looking for an electric vehicle that has the latest technology, the Premium Plus upgrade is certainly worth it. Some of the additional features include a rearview monitor with dynamic lines and a 360º view monitor. Pending Release of the Mazda MX-30 PHEV

Mazda announced its plans to release a plug-in hybrid version of the Mazda MX-30 in the near future. While there’s little information available about this pending release, we do know that the Mazda MX-30 PHEV will feature a gas engine that allows drivers to extend their mileage in between charges, which is certainly a step in the right direction since the 2022 Mazda MX-30 only gets drivers 100 miles for every full battery charge.

While most Americans travel less than 100 miles a day, extending this mileage would make it easier for drivers to take the Mazda MX-30 PHEV on longer trips. A Wankel rotary engine — commonly found in Mazda RX sports cars — will give the Mazda MX-30 PHEV the power it needs to go the distance. While Mazda hasn’t confirmed additional details about the MX-30 PHEV yet, we expect the battery to be smaller and lighter than the one found in the MX-30.

We’re also awaiting Mazda’s announcement regarding whether the MX-30 PHEV will be available nationwide or only in California like the limited MX-30. Either way, we suspect Mazda will continue to concentrate on sales in states that promote EV-encouraging emissions policies.
