How Does The Mazda 3 Exterior Compare To The Honda Civic?

Mazda 3

From the outside, there isn’t much to distinguish the Honda Civic from the Mazda 3. Both vehicles are sleekly designed sedans that look great from all angles. Perhaps the biggest difference in the exterior of the vehicles is the color options available. With the Honda Civic, you have the following color options available for the newest model:

  • Aegean Blue Metallic.
  • Cosmic Blue Metallic.
  • Crystal Black Pearl.
  • Lunar Silver Metallic.
  • Modern Steel Metallic.
  • Molten Lava Pearl.
  • Platinum White Pearl.
  • Rallye Red.

With the Mazda 3, you have the following color options available in 2021:

  • Jet Black Mica.
  • Deep Crystal Blue Mica.
  • Snowflake White Pearl Mica.
  • Machine Gray Metallic.
  • Soul Red Crystal Metallic.
  • Sonic Silver Metallic.

Both vehicles come in plenty of color options, so unless you have a very specific color in mind, you can likely find something you’ll like with both vehicles.

Performance

Inside the Honda Civic, you’ll find a 2.0-liter engine that produces 158 horsepower. Depending on the trim level, you also have the option of upgrading to a turbocharged engine, which produces 180 horsepower. In addition, every Honda Civic sedan comes with a CVT transmission. As for fuel economy, you can expect to get around 30 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway. If you upgrade to the turbo-charged engine, this becomes 32 mpg and 42 mpg, respectively.

With the Mazda 3, you’ll find a 2.0-liter engine that produces 155 horsepower. You also have the option of upgrading to a 2.5-liter turbo-four engine that produces 227 horsepower. Most trim levels of the Mazda 3 come with a six-speed automatic transmission. Finally, as for fuel efficiency, you can expect to get around 28 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway.

When comparing these two vehicles in terms of performance, it’s important to consider what trim level you’re getting. While the base model of the Civic may be a little more powerful and fuel-efficient compared to the Mazda 3, this can change if you opt for a different trim.

Interior Features

There are many interior features available for the Civic, but many of them only come with the more expensive trims. For example, the base model of the Civic only comes with a 5-inch LCD screen, Bluetooth, a single USB port, and four audio speakers. So unless your primary source of entertainment is the radio, you’ll likely want to upgrade to a better trim.

In addition, you’ll find some basic comfort features in the base model, such as automatic climate control, telescoping steering wheel, and driver seat-height adjustment. If you want more advanced features, like heated front seats, leather upholstery, and push-button start, you need to upgrade to another trim.

As for the Mazda 3, the base unit comes with a better infotainment center. The Mazda 3 uses an 8-inch screen which makes it easier to navigate through menus and read the information. There are also Bluetooth capabilities, 2 USB ports, and an HD radio. To get Android Auto and Apple Carplay, however, you’ll need to upgrade above the base trim. Some of the other base features in the Mazda 3 include push-button start, manual air conditioning, and a telescoping wheel. If you want features such as dual-zone automatic climate control and a smart keyless system, these are available in more premium trims.

Safety Features

The Honda Civic and the Mazda 3 have very similar safety features. For example, both base models come with adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and automatic high beams. However, the Mazda 3 has more optional features available. Within the Mazda 3, you can also get a heads-up display, a surround-view parking system, and adaptive headlights, among other features.

Because of all these safety features, the Honda Civic received a Top Safety Pick designation from the IIHS, along with five stars from the NHTSA. However, the Mazda 3 also got 5 stars from the NHTSA, while also earning the IHHS’s Top Safety Pick+ award, which is the organization’s highest honor. So, while both sedans have plenty of safety features, the Mazda 3 is slightly better in this regard.

Trim Levels and Price

Each model comes with its own trim level options, which have a major impact on the total price of the vehicle. There are five trim level options available with the Honda Civic: the LX, Sport, EX, EX-L, and Touring. The LX is the base model and has an MSRP of $21,900. The Touring is the most premium trim and has an MSRP of $28,500. All of the other trims fall somewhere in between these two levels.

As for the Mazda, there are a few more options available. The available trims for the Mazda 3 are the 2.0 Sedan, the 2.5 S Sedan, the Select, the Preferred, the Premium, the 2.5 Turbo, and the 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus. The MSRP for these vehicles ranges from $20,650 for the 2.0 Sedan to $32,600 for the 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus. Therefore, not only does the Mazda 3 have more trim levels for you to choose from but starts off at a more affordable price.
