When shopping for a crossover SUV, you have many exciting options to consider, and it’s important for you to find the right vehicle for your needs. Two popular options that you might check out during your search are the 2022 Mazda CX-5 and the 2022 Honda CR-V. Learning more about these vehicles and comparing them may help you narrow down your search options.

Pricing and Trim Levels

Pricing for your crossover SUV depends on the trim level and features you select. The 2022 Honda CR-V is available in five different trim levels. Prices start at $26,800 MSRP with the base-level LX trim. The Touring trim level has the highest base price of the Honda lineup at $36,600 MSRP.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5, however, is available in eight trim levels. It also offers slightly more affordable starting prices. The base-level 2.5 S trim starts at $26,250 MSRP, and the top-of-the-line 2.5 Turbo Signature trim starts at $39,000. Engine Specifications

Most Mazda CX-5 trim levels come standard with the SKYACTIV-G 2.5 dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) 16-valve four-cylinder engine paired with i-ACTIV all-wheel drive (AWD) and SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission. This engine can reach up to 187 hp and support 186 lb-ft of torque. However, some models come standard with or have the available option of the SKYACTIV-G 2.5 Dynamic Pressure Turbo engine paired with the same AWD and six-speed automatic transmission.

The capabilities of the Turbo engine depend on whether you use 87 or 93 octane fuel. With 87 octane fuel, it achieves up to 227 hp and supports up to 310 lb-ft of torque. With 93 octane fuel, it maxes out at an impressive 256 hp and supports up to 320 lb-ft of torque.

Most Honda CR-V trim levels come standard with the inline four-cylinder engine with turbocharger and a 16-valve DOHC valve train. Honda pairs this with continuously variable transmission (CVT), which is automatic and offers the available Real Time AWD. This engine can achieve an impressive 190 hp, but it supports slightly less torque at 179 lb-ft.

The 2022 Honda CR-V lineup also includes hybrid trim levels and available options. The hybrid engine is an inline four-cylinder paired with a 16-valve DOHC i-VTEC valve train and automatic electronic continuously variable transmission (eCVT). These are the lowest power engines, with 143 hp and 129 lb-ft of torque.

Fuel Efficiency

Fuel efficiency for 2022 Mazda CX-5 vehicles varies based on engine type, but all of these crossover SUVs have an estimated fuel tank capacity of 15.3 gallons. Vehicles with the 2.5 S engine achieve an estimated 24 mpg for city driving, 30 mpg for highway driving, and 26 mpg combined. Vehicles with the 2.5 Turbo engine achieve a slightly lower gas mileage, with 22 mpg for city driving, 27 mpg for highway driving, and 24 mpg combined.

Vehicles in the 2022 Honda CR-V lineup have a slightly smaller fuel tank capacity at only 14 gallons. However, these vehicles generally have slightly better fuel efficiency than CX-5 vehicles. It’s important to note that fuel efficiency depends on the transmission and drivetrain and whether the vehicle is a hybrid. Vehicles with the best gas mileage may have expensive upgrades compared to the standard gas mileage available with most CX-5 trim levels.

For example, non-hybrid CR-Vs with the standard CVT and two-wheel drive have 28 mpg for city driving, 34 mpg for highway driving, and 30 mpg combined. Similarly, non-hybrid CR-Vs with the standard CVT and optional AWD achieve an estimated 27 mpg for city driving, 32 mpg for highway driving, and 29 mpg combined. eCVT hybrid CR-Vs, which have the highest base price, earn an estimated 40 mpg for city driving, 35 mpg for highway driving, and 38 mpg combined.

Cargo and Towing Capacity

Honda CR-Vs vary in cargo and towing capacity based on whether it’s a hybrid or not. Non-hybrid vehicles have 39.2 cubic feet of cargo volume with the rear seat up and 75.8 cubic feet of cargo volume with the seat down. Hybrids have slightly less cargo volume, with 33.2 cubic feet and 68.7 cubic feet of cargo volume with the seat up or down, respectively. Non-hybrid models have a towing capacity of up to 1,500 pounds. There’s currently no towing capacity information available for hybrids.

All Mazda CX-5 models have more towing capacity, with all trim levels able to support up to 2,000 pounds. However, these vehicles have slightly less cargo capacity. Vehicles with the second-row seatback up have 29.1 cubic feet of cargo volume with the floorboard up and 30.8 cubic feet with it down. However, vehicles with the second-row seatback down have 58.1 cubic feet and 59.3 cubic feet of cargo volume with the floorboard up or down, respectively.
