Optimize Your Mazda’s Journey: The Role of Gasoline Octane Ratings
At our Hiley Mazda of Fort Worth dealership, we’re committed to ensuring your Mazda performs at its peak. Understanding the role of gasoline octane ratings is one key factor in maintaining your vehicle’s performance and efficiency. Selecting the right fuel is not just about filling up your tank; it’s about choosing the best option for your Mazda’s engine health and operational efficiency. Let’s explore how octane ratings influence your driving experience and why they matter.

Octane ratings measure a fuel’s ability to resist knocking or pinging during combustion. Knocking or pinging occurs when pockets of air-fuel mixture ignite prematurely inside the engine’s combustion chamber rather than being ignited by the spark plug. This premature ignition can lead to various issues, including reduced engine efficiency, power loss, and damage.
The higher the octane rating, the more resistant the fuel is to premature combustion. This resistance is critical for high-performance or high-compression engines where the pressure and temperature inside the combustion chamber are higher, making the fuel more prone to premature ignition. Common octane ratings seen at gas stations include:
What Are Octane Ratings?
- 87 octane (regular): This is the standard gasoline available at most gas stations. It’s suitable for most vehicles with standard compression engines but may not be sufficient for high-performance engines or cars with higher compression ratios.
- 89 octane (mid-grade): Mid-grade gasoline offers a slightly higher octane rating than regular gasoline. It’s best for vehicles that require a bit more octane than regular gasoline but do not necessarily need the highest octane available.
- 91 or 93 octane (premium): Premium gasoline has the highest octane rating among the common grades available at gas stations. It’s ideal for vehicles with high-performance engines, turbocharged engines, or engines with higher compression ratios.
Mazda’s Recommended Octane Ratings
Here are a few examples of Mazda models and their recommended octane ratings:- Mazda3 Sedan: Regular unleaded fuel with an octane rating of 87 or higher.
- Mazda CX-50: Regular unleaded fuel with an octane rating of 87 or higher.
- Mazda CX-5: Regular unleaded fuel with an octane rating of 87 or higher.
- Mazda CX-30: Regular unleaded fuel with an octane rating of 87 or higher.
- Mazda CX-90: Regular unleaded fuel with an octane rating of 87 or higher.
- Mazda CX-90 plug-in hybrid: Premium unleaded fuel with an octane rating of 91 or higher. You can use regular unleaded fuel, but Mazda warns it may slightly reduce the engine output and vehicle performance.
- Mazda MX-5 Miata: Premium unleaded fuel with an octane rating of 91 or higher. You can use regular or mid-grade fuel with octane ratings between 87 and 90, but it may slightly reduce performance.
